Andy Gleadhill - Music Educator

As a music educationalist Andy has worked at every level of music education from early year’s settings to postgraduate teaching at Universities and Conservatoires. He was for many years the head of the Bristol Arts and Music Service, which he built into a leading music support service and where he pioneered the introduction of world music styles for class instrumental teaching, setting new standards in accessibility and inclusiveness. He was also the founding head of the music education hub "Bristol Plays Music" (now Bristol Beacon) as well as being the Director of the Bristol Centre for Music and the Arts. He has also worked as an examiner for the Guildhall school of Music and Drama and Trinity College London and worked as a consultant and mentor for the ABRSM and RSL Awards (Rockschool). He has also written study pieces and examination syllabuses for the major music examination boards.

Academic

Andy has been an Associate Lecturer at Bath Spa University UK for over 20 years. He teaches on the specialist Postgraduate Secondary Music Teachers Course (PGCE) in the Institute of Education. He has a special research interest in Performing Educational Ethnomusicology.
As an Ethnomusicologist, Andy has travelled widely around the world especially in Africa, South America, South East Asia and India playing and learning about music of other cultures and regularly lectures on the Music of Diverse Cultures. Andy has had many papers and articles published on World Music and Music Education topics
He is  a visiting Professor of Music at the Malaysia Music Teachers Training College. Andy graduated from Norwich City College in 1980 from the foundation diploma in music course with A level music, ABRSM grade 8 theory (distinction) and ABRSM grade 8 practical (merit). He holds a PGCert from Keele University UK, Diploma in Music (NCC), The Certificate in Music Therapy (Distinction) Cert.MT, The Diploma in Sound Therapy (Distinction) Dip.ST and the Diploma in Music (Distinction) DipMus.


Author

Andy is the author of the best selling and highly acclaimed World-Class Teaching Guides and his award winning books have been published on  African Drumming, Brazilian Samba, Gamelan, Jumbie Jam Steel Pans, Class Percussion, African Drumming Book Two, Percussion Buddies, Composing with World Music, Western Classical Music and the Music of India.
 
He has had many articles and features published in specialist academic music and educational magazines and journals. He is a regular contributor to Music Teacher, Teach Primary and Teach Secondary Magazines.
He recently contributed the chapter on music to the academic publication "Popular Culture, Pedagogy and Teacher Education" published by Routledge (2014).
